PRACTICAL GUIDE
How to use random plot generator
A setup, complication, and twist are combined into a short story premise.
Three steps
- Generate a few premises.
- Choose one with a question you want to explore.
- Add stakes, character choices, and an ending before outlining the story.
Example
A library reopening while witnesses disagree could suggest a mystery, but the story still needs a protagonist’s decision.
When it helps
Find a new direction for a short fiction exercise or writing workshop.
What to keep in mind
The assembled parts may not naturally fit together, and no premise is a finished plot.
