## Open English Wordnet 2025

The English word pools contain a filtered selection of lemmas derived from [Open English Wordnet 2025](https://en-word.net/downloads) by the Open English Wordnet Team, which in turn incorporates Princeton WordNet. We selected single-word entries, removed some uncommon and sensitive entries, and ranked candidates against five public-domain novels. The selection and organization were changed; the source's definitions and example sentences are not reproduced.

The later `core-lexicon-quality.mjs` supplement and its smaller familiar-word selection were checked against the same Open English Wordnet JSON for the stated part of speech. A few contemporary terms absent from its matching synsets were independently selected and manually checked as normal English usage. The `Familiar` label describes an editorial selection, not an exhaustive frequency classification. No word list or wording was taken from a competitor's generator.

## Word selection reference texts

Five public-domain [Project Gutenberg](https://www.gutenberg.org/) books were used only to estimate common-word frequency and observed parts of speech: *Pride and Prejudice* (ebook 1342), *Moby Dick* (2701), *Alice's Adventures in Wonderland* (11), *The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes* (1661), and *Frankenstein* (84). Their prose is not included in the generator output banks.

The local build-time part-of-speech model is spaCy's `en_core_web_sm` 3.8.0, distributed under the [MIT license](https://spacy.io/models/en). Its model files are not distributed with this site.

## World English Bible

Bible verse quotations are from the [World English Bible Classic](https://ebible.org/eng-web/), a public-domain translation. Verse text is copied verbatim from its official verse-per-line release; individual source references link to the corresponding official chapter.

## Random Picture Generator photographs

The picture generator contains 160 locally hosted, resized photographic copies selected from individual [Wikimedia Commons](https://commons.wikimedia.org/) file pages. Each file page reported the [Creative Commons CC0 1.0 public-domain dedication](https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/) when selected. CC0 permits reuse, including commercial reuse, without mandatory attribution; we still link each public result to its own Commons file page and the CC0 deed so visitors can inspect the creator, original file, and current rights information. The local selection and editorial captions are Random Word Lab's; the underlying photographs are third-party work. Wikimedia Commons [advises reusers to verify each file's status](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Reusing_content_outside_Wikimedia) and notes that privacy, personality, trademark, or other non-copyright restrictions can still matter. Our private source record `research/photo-provenance-2026-11-01.md` lists every file page and local SHA-256; `research/photo-license-audit-2026-11-01.json` records the individual CC0 metadata recheck.

## U.S. name data

Built-in name collections combine an original editorial selection with aggregate U.S. [Social Security Administration national baby-name data](https://catalog.data.gov/dataset/baby-names-from-social-security-card-applications-national-data) for selected birth years 1900, 1950, 1980, 2000, and 2020 and [Census Bureau name tables](https://www.census.gov/topics/population/genealogy/data/2020_names.html), including the [2010 surname table](https://www.census.gov/data/developers/data-sets/surnames/2010.html). The SSA data catalog marks the national dataset CC0 1.0. We attribute the Census Bureau under its [citation policy](https://www.census.gov/about/policies/citation.html).

The default collection contains 1,012 given names selected from popular U.S. births in 2020 and an earlier curated neutral-associated set, plus 1,000 surnames from the 2020 Census table. The optional extended collection includes 9,674 given names and 10,005 surnames. The source selection removes duplicates and obvious placeholders and limits name length. Broad first-name associations come from reported aggregate counts and do not describe anyone's identity. Draws are uniform within a selected collection, so they do not represent current U.S. popularity. The extended collection has not had an individual human spelling review of every entry. Official bulk downloads blocked our automated client, so we used documented [SSA](https://github.com/hackerb9/ssa-baby-names/tree/main/raw-data) and [Census](https://github.com/cfpb/proxy-methodology/blob/master/input_files/Names_2010Census.csv) copies and have not verified a byte-for-byte match with the official ZIPs.

## CMU Pronouncing Dictionary

The optional syllable filter for English word tools uses vowel-phoneme counts derived from the [CMU Pronouncing Dictionary](https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict) at revision `74790861f652b15e4ac49015a90074ad62a27690`. Only counts for words in our collection are bundled in the server-side generator. Words with conflicting pronunciation counts or no source entry are excluded when the filter is selected. The dictionary models U.S. English pronunciation and can contain errors or regional differences.

## Unicode Emoji 18.0

The emoji generator uses the Unicode Consortium's [Emoji 18.0 `emoji-test.txt`](https://www.unicode.org/Public/18.0.0/emoji/emoji-test.txt). We retain fully-qualified emoji sequences and short English names, omit skin-tone permutations, and group the resulting 1,923 entries by the file's categories. Unicode's data, artwork, and fonts are distinct; this site uses character sequences rendered by each visitor's device and does not bundle Unicode chart images or fonts.
